DUI Facts
- 639 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes, which was 44 percent of the 1,453 total crash fatalities.
- If a typical 160-pound male drinks 5 standard drinks over a 2 hour period, he would reach a BAC of .08, making him legally intoxicated in all 50 states and DC.
- Almost half of the approximately 2,200 persons who die annually in traffic crashes involving drinking drivers under 21 are persons other than the drinking driver.
- More than 49,000 DUI arrests were recorded by the Secretary of State's office.
- 93 percent of all drivers arrested for DUI, who were eligible, lost their driving privileges.
- 2,863 drivers under age 21 lost their driving privileges due to "Use It & Lose It" law violations.
- 17 percent of those arrested for DUI are women, who represent 50 percent of all licensed drivers.
- 83 percent of all drivers arrested for DUI are first offenders.
- Alcohol problems cost society an estimated $214 billion a year, with $17.9 billion of that amount stemming from alcohol-related auto crashes.
- At .08, a driver is three times more likely to be involved in a car crash than a sober driver, and 11 times more likely to be killed in a single-vehicle crash.
- About 80 percent of alcohol-related crash fatalities are caused by drivers with no arrests for drunk driving during the previous three years.
- 47% of traffic fatalities in Illinois are alcohol related.
- 77% of alcohol-related traffic fatalities occur between midnight and 3am.
- 84% of all crashes between midnight and 3am are alcohol related.
- 1/3rd of 8th graders have ridden with an alcohol impaired driver.
- Alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes was four times higher at night than during the day (36% versus 9%).
- Thirty-one percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes on weekends were alcohol-impaired, compared with 15 percent during the week.
- Each year, more than 13,500 die on our roads due to impaired driving. That would equal more than 33 jumbo jets crashing each year.
- 21.1 percent of Americans ages 18 to 25 have alcohol or other drug problems serious enough to require addiction treatment.
