Gambling Action Alert

Legislature called back in session next week - Keep Circulating Petitions!

The Governor called the Legislature back in session next Wednesday, November 28 to solve the mass transit issue. Chicago Sun-Times gossip columnist Michael Sneed wrote today, "a solution to the state's budget woes and a bailout for Chicago's mass transit mess may be in sight. Translation: It looks like a gaming bill, which was holding up the state's transit package, is heading to passage. Word is an agreement on a new bill has been reached with all the legislative leaders and the governor." As they say, the devil is in the details. We must keep working and not give up.

If you want to know why gambling expands, follow the money. Family Taxpayers Network wrote an article, Tom Cross' gambling money addiction. Since Tom Cross became House Minority Leader in 2002, he has accepted at least $542,500 in campaign contributions from the gambling industry - the horse racing, casino and riverboat companies that are making a bundle from Illinois residents.

We must not give up. Keep collecting signatures on petitions and make calls to state legislators asking them to OPPOSE solutions that include an expansion of gambling.

For Immediate Action

  1. Call your State Senator and State Representative (217-782-2000) and ask them to OPPOSE any solution that includes an expansion of gambling.
  2. Circulate petitions at meetings, Thanksgiving gatherings, and in your church, synagogue, or mosque this week-end.
  3. Forward to 10 others.

NOTE: Make copies of the signed petitions--one for each State Representative and State Senator in your village/city, and one copy for yourself. Then hand deliver or mail the signed petitions to the District offices of your Legislators on November 26. Include a cover letter explaining that the petitions are from people in the district (and neighboring districts). Include your phone number and ask the Legislator to contact you if there are any questions. To find the addresses, click on the member list of Representatives and Senators at the Illinois General Assembly web site.

Call ILCAAAP at 877-204-6863 to let us know the number of signatures you collected and the names of the Legislators they were delivered to.
