Gambling Action Alert

No Gambling Expansion This Week - Keep Working and Keep Praying

Legislative leaders and the Governor are scheduled to meet again in Chicago on Monday. The non-action of the General Assembly means that we must keep gathering petitions to show Legislators that people in their district do not want more gambling. Copies of the petition are available here.

Next week a series of events will focus on the impact of gambling expansion in Chicago. We hope those of you in the Chicago area will participate. The Task Force to Oppose Gambling in Chicago is announcing the following events:

  1. December 1, 2007, Saturday, 5:30-8:00 PM, Glenview United Methodist Church, 727 Harlem Avenue, Glenview, IL, awards for leading the fight to oppose casinos for Rev. Tom Grey and Fr. Mike Pfleger, sponsored by Community Partners for the Common Good, Inc.;
  2. December 3, 2007, Monday, 9:30 AM, 160 N. LaSalle, Fifth Floor, Chicago, Press Conference with Rev. Al Sampson, Fr. Mike Pfleger and Rev. Tom Grey to announce a revitalized fight against a Chicago casino;
  3. December 3, 2007, Monday, 11 AM, 160 N. LaSalle, 5th Floor, Chicago, Illinois Gaming Board meting on self exclusion. Anita Bedell (ILCAAAP), Kathy Gilroy (Northern IL Anti-Gambling Task Force), and Todd R. (son of a gambler on the self-exclusion list) will testify.
  4. December 4, 2007, 7:30 AM, Union League Club, 65 West Jackson, Chicago, a debate on the casino in Chicago with Rev. Tom Grey, Field Director of the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, Jeannette Tamayo General Counsel for the Chicago Crime Commission, Jerry Roper, Chicago Chamber of Commerce, and State Rep. Bob Molaro.
  5. December 6, 2007, 10:00 AM, 77 West Washington, Pierce Hall (Lower Level), Chicago a People's Hearing on a casino in Chicago. Alderman Joe Moore (49) will chair this focus on addictions and gambling.

For Immediate Action

  1. Circulate petitions in your church, synagogue, or mosque the next two week-ends. Download copies of the petition.
  2. Attend the People's Hearing on Thursday, Dec. 6, if you live in or near Chicago.
  3. Forward to 10 others.
